Right beside the castle, this is pure fun — but with one of the best rooftop views in the city.
The Victorian camera obscura show is surprisingly fascinating, and the illusion rooms are genuinely interactive. It’s light-hearted, clever and a brilliant contrast to the heavier history of the morning.
The Hidden Vaults Tour
📍 Location: Royal Mile
Descend beneath the streets into Edinburgh’s underground vaults. Dark history, hidden chambers and atmospheric storytelling make this one of the most memorable experiences in the city.

Head towards Holyrood for Dynamic Earth.
It’s immersive, engaging and impressive — even for adults. Think interactive storytelling, planetarium shows and a journey through the history of our planet.
It balances out the historic focus of Day 1 perfectly.
Top Tip: The Scottish Parliament is right beside this attraction!
Holyrood Distillery
📍 Location:
The Distillery is only 15mins walk from Dynamic Earth. Wander over and finish the afternoon with a distillery tour.
Modern, beautifully designed and right in the city centre, this is a great introduction to Scotland’s whisky-making traditions. The tasting session feels like a relaxed way to transition into the evening.
Evening: Live Music and Tradition
Live music at a local pub. Conclude your day by enjoying some more live Scottish music at one of Edinburgh’s histoirc pubs, such as the Royal Oak.
Bonus points if you try Haggis, Neeps, and Tatties. A must do traditional dish. Most restaurants will have a vegetarian alternative if you prefer!

Morning: A dose of culture and cold war secrets
Craigmillar Castle

Often described as Edinburgh’s “secret castle”, Craigmillar is quieter, less crowded and beautifully atmospheric.
It offers incredible views back toward the city skyline and feels far more rugged than Edinburgh Castle. If you enjoy photography or medieval architecture, this is a standout.
Barnton Bunker

This attraction is weekends only.
Descend into one of Britain’s most secret Cold War sites—and part of Scotland’s most ambitious volunteer-led restoration projects. Originally built in the 1950s as a three-level ROTOR R4 Sector Operations Centre, Barnton later became Scotland’s Regional Seat of Government, designed to function during a nuclear aftermath.
