What our customers say…

We got the Edinburgh city pass for 2 days while we were up there for a mini holiday, and were really impressed with how many attractions it included, and for a great price. Well worth getting and planning your trips and attractions.

The views from the top of Scott monument was breathtaking. I would not have gone up without the pass. Would recommend as an easy and affordable way to enjoy Edinburgh.

Edinburgh city pass is a must do for anybody wanting to get the most out of a short holiday in Edinburgh. It’s easy to use too. It was all electronic and I could just whip out my phone for the staff at the each venue for them to scan it.

Are Edinburgh attractions within walking distance of each other?

Absolutely! Many of the city’s top attractions are concentrated around the Royal Mile and Princes Street.

Edinburgh is compact, and it’s entirely possible to walk between major sights in 10–20 minutes. The Big Bus tour included with the Edinburgh City Pass adds flexibility if you’d prefer not to walk uphill sections.

Do I need a car in Edinburgh?

Parking in the city centre can be limited and expensive, and most attractions are easily reached on foot or by public transport. If you’re staying centrally, a car can actually be more hassle than help.

If you’re planning day trips beyond the city, trains and organised tours are usually the easiest option.

If you’re using the Edinburgh City Pass, getting around is even simpler. The pass includes the Big Bus hop-on hop-off tour, which connects many of the city’s key attractions, as well as an open return airport tram transfer — so you can move between the airport and city centre without arranging separate tickets.

Do I need to book tickets in advance in Edinburgh?

For popular attractions, especially Edinburgh Castle, advance booking is strongly recommended, particularly in summer and August.

Using the Edinburgh City Pass simplifies this process. Over 20 attractions, recommended by locals, are included in one purchase, helping you plan ahead and avoid multiple ticket transactions.

Does the Edinburgh City Pass include Edinburgh Castle?

Yes — Edinburgh Castle is included on some Edinburgh City Pass options, including passes that feature the Edinburgh Castle Walking Tour with castle entry.

As the city’s most popular attraction, castle tickets regularly sell out in peak season. Choosing a pass that includes the castle helps you plan ahead and secure your visit as part of your overall sightseeing.

Just make sure you select the pass option that includes Edinburgh Castle when booking, as not all versions of the Edinburgh City Pass include castle entry.

How do I get from Edinburgh Airport to the city centre?

Getting into the city is easy.

With your Edinburgh City Pass, you can take the Edinburgh Trams service directly from Edinburgh Airport into the city centre. Trams run frequently and take around 30 minutes to reach central stops such as Princes Street and St Andrew Square.

Importantly, using the tram from the airport will not activate your pass. Your pass only activates when you visit your first included attraction.

You can also choose the Airlink 100 bus, which runs 24/7 between the airport and Waverley Bridge in the city centre. Taxis and ride-share services are available outside the terminal if you prefer door-to-door transport.

If you’re staying centrally, the tram is usually the simplest and most comfortable option.

How expensive is Edinburgh?

Edinburgh is moderately expensive compared with many European cities. It’s cheaper than London overall, but prices for accommodation, eating out and attractions tend to be on the higher side, especially in the city centre and around popular tourist areas like the Royal Mile and Princes Street.

  • Accommodation – Hotel prices vary a lot by season, but expect higher rates during festivals (like August’s Fringe) and summer. Budget options exist, but mid-range hotels and well-located places can be pricey.

  • Food & Drink – You’ll find everything from affordable cafés and pubs to higher-end restaurants. A mid-range meal with a drink will be noticeable but not shocking; fine dining can get expensive fast.

  • Attractions – Tickets for major sights and experiences can add up, although many museums are free.

  • Transport – The city centre is very walkable, so you can save by exploring on foot; buses and trams are affordable if you need them.

Overall, Edinburgh feels worth the cost for most visitors, but it helps to plan and book in advance — especially accommodation during peak times. One of the easiest ways to manage costs is with the Edinburgh City Pass, which bundles entry to top attractions into one fixed price and can offer better value than buying individual tickets separately.

How far is Edinburgh Castle from the city centre?

Edinburgh Castle is right in the heart of the city — it sits proudly at the top of the Royal Mile in the Old Town.

If you’re staying centrally, you can easily walk there. It’s around 10–15 minutes on foot from Princes Street and Waverley Station, although be prepared for a bit of an uphill climb at the end (it is a castle on a volcanic rock, after all).

No buses or taxis are needed if you’re based in the city centre — just comfortable shoes and a camera for the views at the top.

How many days do I need in Edinburgh?

For most visitors, two to three days in Edinburgh is ideal.

In two days, you can cover the essentials at a comfortable pace, exploring the Royal Mile, visiting Edinburgh Castle, stepping inside Camera Obscura, and discovering the city’s historic closes, viewpoints and museums. You’ll have time to enjoy good food, a whisky tasting and a proper wander without feeling rushed.

If you have three days, you can slow things down and add in experiences like a boat trip on the Forth, a distillery tour, Arthur’s Seat, or even a half-day trip beyond the city centre. Edinburgh is compact and very walkable, but it rewards those who give it a little breathing space.

If you’re using the Edinburgh City Pass, two days works perfectly. If you want a more relaxed trip, or plan to explore further afield, three days gives you that flexibility.

Is Edinburgh busy in August?

August is peak season due to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and other summer events.

The city has an incredible atmosphere, but accommodation books up early and attractions are busier. Planning ahead is essential.

A city pass helps streamline entry and structure your time during the busiest month of the year.

Is Edinburgh easy to get around?

Yes — Edinburgh is one of the most walkable cities in the UK.

The Old Town and New Town are compact, and many major attractions sit within walking distance of each other. Buses and trams are easy to use if you need them, but most visitors explore on foot.

The Edinburgh City Pass helps simplify things further by grouping top attractions together, so you’re not zig-zagging across the city.

Is Edinburgh good for a weekend break?

Absolutely — Edinburgh is one of Europe’s best weekend city breaks.

It offers dramatic scenery, layered history, strong food and drink culture, and a compact layout that allows you to see a lot in a short time. A two-day Edinburgh City Pass is particularly well-suited to weekend visitors who want maximum value and minimal admin.

What are the must-see attractions in Edinburgh?

First-time visitors usually prioritise:

  • Edinburgh Castle

  • The Royal Mile

  • Camera Obscura & World of Illusions

  • A whisky or distillery experience

  • A boat trip on the Forth

The Edinburgh City Pass includes many of the city’s headline experiences, making it easy to see the highlights without overplanning.
