The Best Bookshops in Edinburgh

Here’s our ultimate list of the best bookshops in Edinburgh. Some old, some new but all worth a visit.

Edinburgh, a UNESCO City of Literature, is home to some of the most charming and unique bookshops in the world. Whether you’re a lover of rare first editions, hunting for the latest bestseller, or simply searching for a cozy spot to lose yourself in a great story, the best bookshops in Edinburgh offer a diverse range of options for every reader. From independent gems tucked away in cobbled streets to iconic stores with historic roots, explore the city’s literary treasures and find your next favorite read in one of the best bookshops Edinburgh has to offer.

There’s an unmistakable scent that comes with vintage bookshops and no place we would rather be to while away a couple of hours. For us the smell of a dusty old book shop mixed with coffee gives us that warm cosy feeling in our bellies.

These are our favorite bookshops in Edinburgh to find one and maybe sit for a wee while…

Armchair Books

72-74 West Port, Edinburgh, EH1 2LE

This is my favourite vintage shop in all of Edinburgh. Such a quirky little place, filled with the oldest books and on shelves that form arches above your head. Overflowing and filled with character, you can get lost here for hours. Sometimes I do.

  • Mary’s Milk Bar, which is famous for homemade gelato in unusual flavours is just a 3 minute walk away!

Topping & Co.

2 Blenheim Pl, Edinburgh EH7 5JH

This is a bookshop to completely lose yourself in – both figuratively and literally! Set over two floors, there are endless shelves of books to choose from. Big bonus- another bonus is that they often have signed copies. Grab one of the armchairs and have a cup of tea (on them) and relax. Because of it’s size and ambience it truly is one of the best bookshops in Edinburgh!

  • The St James Quarter, is just down the road for some amazing shopping!

Golden Hare Books

68 St Stephen St, Edinburgh, EH3 5AQ

Walking into Golden Hare Books in Edinburgh feels like stepping into a cozy literary sanctuary. The warm, wooden shelves are filled with handpicked titles, and the scent of fresh paper mingles with the charm of the space. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, always ready with thoughtful recommendations and because of that, it make browsing a delight.

  • This bookshop is located in Stockbridge, a charming neighbourhood known for its village-like atmosphere and picturesque streets. Here you will find many independent shops, cafes, bars and restaurants!

Rare Birds Book Shop

13 Raeburn Pl, Edinburgh EH4 1HU

Stepping into Rare Bird Books in Edinburgh feels like uncovering a hidden gem, where every corner is filled with unique and carefully curated books. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with shelves that seem to hold a story for every reader. The knowledgeable staff adds to the experience, always eager to share the fascinating histories behind their rare and vintage selections.

  • This is just a 5 minute walk from Golden Hare Books so you can visit both while you’re in the area!

We got the Edinburgh city pass for 2 days while we were up there for a mini holiday, and were really impressed with how many attractions it included, and for a great price. Well worth getting and planning your trips and attractions.

Edinburgh city pass is a must do for anybody wanting to get the most out of a short holiday in Edinburgh. It’s easy to use too. It was all electronic and I could just whip out my phone for the staff at the each venue for them to scan it.
