Victorian Stirling: From Market Town to Modern City
How the 19th Century Gave Stirling Its Skyline
When the Victorian era arrived, Stirling was ancient in its history but the new century gave it a facelift that still defines the skyline today.
The Arrival of the Railway
The arrival of the railway in the 1840s ushered in new prosperity, linking Stirling’s merchants and industries to Glasgow, Edinburgh, and beyond. Jobs opened up in factories, opportunities grew, and a wave of civic pride swept through the town. The Tolbooth was refurbished, new schools and banks were built, and elegant villas began to rise toward King’s Park. Within just a few decades, the face of Stirling had changed completely.
A City Rebuilt — Victorian Style
Yet in classic Victorian fashion, they embraced the drama of the past a little too enthusiastically. After transforming the Old Town, they rebuilt much of it in the style of the 1700s to preserve its ancient character — but not always consistently. Across Stirling, Roman rubs shoulders with Greek, architectural eras collide, and neighbouring buildings often look nothing alike. Oddly enough, it’s exactly this mishmash that makes the city so distinctive.
The Wallace Monument: A Victorian Tribute to Scotland
The Gothic Tower dates from the 19th century, when Victorians adored medieval heroes. Inside you’ll find galleries on Wallace, relics and exhibitions of the time, and 246 steps to the crown for one of the most rewarding views in Scotland.
The National Wallace Monument was designed by the Scottish architect John Thomas Rochead (J. T. Rochead). Construction began in 1861 and the monument was completed in 1869.
