Edinburgh Nuclear Bunker – Weekend Tours

This attraction requires advanced booking.

Discover Scotland’s Hidden Underground Bunker

Descend into one of Britain’s most secret Cold War sites—and part of Scotland’s most ambitious volunteer-led restoration projects. Originally built in the 1950s as a three-level ROTOR R4 Sector Operations Centre, Barnton later became Scotland’s Regional Seat of Government, designed to function during a nuclear aftermath. Today, volunteers restore both the raw scars and operational spaces of this haunting underground city—preserving history while inviting you to step back into a world built to withstand catastrophe.

Highlights

  • Step back in time inside a Cold War bunker abandoned for decades, now preserved through a remarkable grassroots restoration project.
  • Experience the raw and authentic atmosphere of fire-scarred rooms, stripped interiors, and the haunting remains of a site once sealed for survival.
  • Uncover layers of history – from a 1950s air-defence hub, to Scotland’s Regional Seat of Government, to years of neglect and decay.
  • See restoration in action – volunteers from around the world are working to piece the bunker back together, balancing scars with careful repair.
  • Explore a hidden underground city where secrecy, survival planning, and Cold War tensions shaped life beneath Edinburgh.

Edinburgh city pass is a must do for anybody wanting to get the most out of a short holiday in Edinburgh. It’s easy to use too. It was all electronic and I could just whip out my phone for the staff at the each venue for them to scan it.

We got the Edinburgh city pass for 2 days while we were up there for a mini holiday, and were really impressed with how many attractions it included, and for a great price. Well worth getting and planning your trips and attractions.
